Mitochondria and chloroplasts have their own genome. Both these cell organelles have a striking similarity to bacteria. It is widely accepted that mitochondria and chloroplasts evolved from bacteria that were engulfed by nucleated ancestral cells. This evidence is described in the endosymbiotic theory. When one organism lives inside the other, to benefit each other, it is called endosymbiosis. The theory describes how a large host cell and ingested bacteria could easily become dependent on one another for survival, resulting in a permanent relationship. Both organelles use their DNA to produce many proteins and enzymes required for cell functions.
