Nitrogen is adsorbed on an iron surface at 83 K which decreases rapidly with increase in temperature and at room temperature, practically no adsorption of nitrogen occurs. The adsorption, however, becomes significant at 773K.
Reason
At lower temperature, adsorption of nitrogen molecules on the iron surface is physisorption and at high temperatures, nitrogen shows chemisorption of N atoms on the iron surface.

Note: Physisorption is an exothermic process. It is favored at low temperature. The extent of physisorption decreases with increase in temperature. On the other hand, chemisorption occurs at all temperatures but the extent of adsorption increases with rise in temperature.
