Nathuram Godse considered Gandhiji's efforts in the Indian freedom struggle detrimental to Hinduism. He blamed Mahatma Gandhi and his ideas for the atrocities against Hindus in the communal riots in pre and post-independent India. He also blamed Gandhiji for the partition of India and for supporting the Muslim community. His belief in assertive militant Hinduism as opposed to the secular Hindu ideology of Mahatma Gandhi. Thus, on 30th January 1948, in a prayer meeting, he assassinated Mahatma Gandhi by firing three bullets to his chest.
