Question

Assertion :Nitrite can be oxidized or reduced, with the product somewhat dependent on the oxidizing/reducing agent and its strength. Reason: Nitrogen is present in some intermediate oxidation state i.e.,between its highest and lowest oxidation state in nitrite ion.

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
Assertion:
Nitrite ion can be oxidised or reduced depending on oxidising/ reducing agents strength.

Example:
Oxidised:- 5NO2+2MnO4+6H5NO3+2MnO+2+3H2O
Reduced:- 6I+2NO2+8H+3I2+N2+4H2O

Reason:
NO2 oxidisation state +3 between 0(minimum ) and (+5) maximum oxidisation state of N.
Hence can be both reduced and oxidised.
