Solution

The correct option is C Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect
Rhizobium is a nitrogen-fixing bacteria present in legume root nodules. The nodule contains all the necessary biochemical components-enzymes nitrogenase and leghaemoglobin.
The enzyme nitrogenase is a Mo-Fe protein and catalyses the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia. It is highly sensitive to the molecular oxygen (requires anaerobic condition) have an oxygen-scavenger leg-haemoglobin in the nodules for its protection from oxygen.
Thus, the bacteria live as aerobes when nitrogenase is not operational, but during the nitrogen-fixing events, they become anaerobic.
So the correct answer is 'Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect'.
