Nitrogen fixation takes place in the presence of enzyme nitrogenase which is active in anaerobic conditions. This enzyme is present in the root nodules of leguminous plants. A red pigment called leghaemoglobin is present in the cytosol of nodule cells. The pigment leghaemoglobin is similar to haemoglobin of red blood cells. It has the ability to combine very rapidly with with oxygen and thus acts as oxygen scavenger. Thus it helps in maintaining the anaerobic conditions for nitrogen fixation.
Thus, the correct answer is option A.
