In nitrous acid (HNO2), the nitrogen atom has oxidation state of +3.
This is in between the highest oxidation state (+5) and lowest oxidation state (3). Thus, nitrous acid can either accept or lose electrons and get reduced or oxidized.
Hence, nitrous acid can act as oxidizing and reducing agent.
