Stereoisomerism in which the isomers are identical in most of the physical and chemical properties but differ in their effect on the rotation of polarising light, are called optical isomers. e.g. In medicines a particular property which one isomer hide, other ravels due to which one can use as life-saving drug whereas other becomes toxic or of no use. Where as chirality is a geometric property of some molecules and ions. A chiral molecule/ion is non-superposable on its mirror image. The presence of an asymmetric carbon atom is one of the several structural features that induce chirality in organic and inorganic molecules.
