Nitrogen exists as diatomic molecule N2 in which two N atoms are bonded by a tripple bond. Nitrogen can form pπpπ multiple bonds but P cannot form pπpπ multiple bonds. Hence, phosphorious forms discrete tetrahedral, tetra atomic P4 molecules.
