Solution

The correct option is D Both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion
Air pollution is any undesirable change in physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air. Air pollutants are airborne substances (solids, liquids, or gases) that occur in concentrations high enough to harm the organisms, vegetation, structures or toxify the environment.

Air pollutants can be particulate, such as, dust, soot, fly ash, etc., or gaseous, such as, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc.

Particulate pollutants larger than 10 micrometres in diameter tend to settle down within a day of their release. Smaller particles remain suspended for a longer time and are more harmful.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) particulate matter of size 2.5 micrometres or less can cause health hazards to humans. This is because these particles can reach the lungs along with inhaled air and can get lodged there causing irritation, inflammation, respiratory infections and breathing difficulties.

Thus, both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.
