Solution
The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
Photorespiration is a process in which high oxygen concentration and temperature decrease the rate of photosynthesis. In C3 plants, when there are high O2 and temperature, RuBisCO (Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase) binds with O2 instead of CO2 and forms one molecule of phosphoglycerate and phosphoglycolate. This pathway is called photorespiration. There is neither synthesis of sugars nor ATP, instead, ATP is utilized. This process interferes with the successful functioning of the Calvin cycle of C3 plants as it prevents the fixation of CO2 by removing RuBP which is the acceptor of CO2 molecule in the Calvin cycle. Ribulose bisphosphate is produced from ribulose-5-phosphate, which in turn is produced from pentose phosphate. Hence, photorespiration removes pentose phosphate, an acceptor of CO2 in the Calvin cycle.
Hence, assertion and reason are correct and the reason is the correct explanation for the assertion.
So, the correct answer is 'Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion'.
