Solution

The correct option is B Both the assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion
Population density is a measurement of population per unit area. High population density can cause increased competition for resources while low population density can cause problems with finding mates and lead to inbreeding.

Population density is often used as a simple relative measure of how an organism responds to local conditions. If conditions are not good for the species, the density will be low (organisms will have died or moved out of the sampled area), whereas if conditions are good the density will be high (organisms will have reproduced and/or immigrated into the area). In this way, changes in density can provide insight into the natural history of the preferences and tolerances of individuals of the species.

The size of the population tells us a lot about its status in the habitat like the outcome of competition with another species, the impact of a predator or the effect of a pesticide application etc.

The population density can either be determined by absolute density or relative density if the number is difficult to count or meaningless. Thus both absolute density and relative density serve equally well to find the total number of individuals in a population for a given area.

So both the assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
