Solution
The correct option is B Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion Potassium chromate solution gives a yellow precipitate of barium chromate when the solution containing Ba2+ in acetic acid is treated with it. Ba2++CH3COOH→(CH3COO)2Ba+H++CO2 (CH3COO)2Ba+K2CrO4→BaCrO4↓(yellow ppt)+CH3COOK SrCrO4 and CaCrO4 are not precipitated with potassium chromate solution in acetic acid because Ksp value of SrCrO4 and CaCrO4 are much higher than BaCrO4. Addition of acetic acid lowers the concentration of CrO2−4. Hence BaCrO4 is precipitated only because of its low Ksp value.
