In extraction of copper, following reactions occur:
$2 C u F e S_{2} + O_{2} \to C u_{2} S + 2 F e S + S O_{2}$ ;

$2 F e S + 3 O_{2} \to 2 F e O + 2 S O_{2}$

$F e O + S i O_{2} \to F e S i O_{3}$ ;

Thus removing the basic impurity of iron oxide.
