Question

Assertion :STATEMENT -1 : In an electric circuit containing an inductor, resistor, a switch and a cell in series, when the switch is opened long after it was closed, spark will not occur but spark may occur if the switch is closed long after it was opened Reason: STATEMENT - 2 : In the above situation the inductor in the circuit tends to maintain the situation that was present prior to changing the position of the switch and a spark is nothing but current through air.

Solution

The correct option is D Statement -1 is False, Statement -2 is True.
A spark occurs when when current suddenly increases significantly starting from zero. But as an inductor is present in series in the circuit, there are no sudden changes in the current through circuit. Hence a spark does not occur neither when switch is closed nor when opened.
