Sticky ends are produced by restriction enzymes when the cleavage point lies away from the axis of symmetry within the recognition site. This generates overhangs either at 5’ or 3’ ends. They help in the formation of hydrogen bonds with their complementary cut counterparts.
In recombinant DNA technology sticky end producing restriction enzymes are preferred over blunt ends producing restriction enzymes. It is so because sticky ends increase the chance of recombinant DNA formation by providing an overhang, which is not the case with the blunt end producing restriction enzymes.
