In order to break the nucleus into its constituent nucleons an amount of energy equal to binding energy has to be supplied to the nucleus.
From this we can conclude that the nucleons are bound together in a nucleus due to binding energy between them.
Rest mass of the stable nucleus of stab;e atom is always less than the sum of masses of constituent nucleons. The difference is called mass defect m (i.e.,m.c2) is utilized in keeping the nucleons bound together. This energy is known as binding energy. Hence both sentence are correct and reason is correct explanation for Assertion
