The sporogoinum (capsule) of Riccia is the simplest among the liverwort .It lacks both the food and the seta . There no elater .Unlike other liverworts the embryo sporogonium and spore mother cells in Riccia develop no chloroplasts. Thus no photosynthesis occurs there. The sporophytic remains totally dependent upon the gametophytic thallus.
