Wood is secondary xylem developed from the lateral meristematic tissue or lateral cambium. Secondary growth in most of the plants is seasonal, twice a year, resulting formation of new xylem tissue which carries out the function of transporting minerals and water, while the older xylem is filled with tylosis, resins, tannins and other excretory products of the plant that makes it hard and prevent flow of water and minerals, forming the wood.
Secondary growth occurs mostly in dicot stem and root and gymnosperms.
