In young stem of Funaria , the cortical cells contain chloroplasts hence , they are photosynthetic. The central cylinder forms the core of the stem. It consists of vertically elongated ,thin -walled narrow ,compactly arranged cells without protoplasm. These thin walled, elongate ,dead cells with nonlignified walls are commonly called the hydroids .
