Question

Assertion :To determine the age of certain very old organic samples, dating of the sample with radioactive isotopes having larger half-life is a better choice than with radioactive isotopes having smaller half-lives. Reason: The activity of a radioactive sample having smaller half-life is negligibly small after a very long time and hence makes it next to impossible to get detected.

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
Half life is the time at which the quantity of the radioactive sample is halved. It is an indicator of the decay rate.
Shorter half life corresponds to high decay rate and an early decay of the sample. Thus the amount of radioactive decay sample becomes almost zero in such a case and age-determination experiment cannot take place.
