Animals that have their DNA manipulated to possess and express an extra or foreign gene are known as transgenic animals. To test the toxicity of a particular drug transgenic animals are made that carry genes which make them more sensitive to that drug because toxicity testing in such animals will allow us to obtain results in lesser time.

Transgenic crops are made to prevent destruction of crops by insects. Bacillus thuringiensis is commonly used as biological pesticides. During sporulation Bt strains produce crystal proteins, encoded by cry genes, called endotoxins that have insecticidal action. These are called cry proteins which denature alkaline digestive tracts of insects. Bt genes are engineered into plants like cotton, maize etc.
