Respiratory pigments are generally found in the blood of all animals. It is a chemical material which has high affinity to combine with oxygen of atmosphere in lungs at their high pressure and forms such compound which can be transported with blood, to the tissues of the body and then releases oxygen in tissue where pressure of oxygen is less. Thus it increases the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Mainly four types of respiratory pigments are found in animals -
  • Haemoglobin
  • Haemocyanin
  • Chlorocruorin and
  • Haemerythrin
The vertebrate blood has the highest carrying capacity for oxygen, as it has four sub units for oxygen binding.
