Solution

The correct option is B Both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion
Every living organism on this planet is a bioresource which has some contribution towards the sustenance of life on the Earth. Thus conserving and protecting all organisms is not only a necessity but also a responsibility.

The reasons that justify the need for biodiversity conservation can be listed as follows :
  • Narrowly utilitarian reasons - All the economic utilities that derive from the living beings such as food, fabric, wood, medicines, etc.
  • Broadly utilitarian reasons - The invaluable services provided by organisms towards the ecosystem they live in, such as, release of oxygen by plants, climate regulation, pollination by insects, etc. This also includes intangible benefits such as the aesthetic pleasures (enjoying the beauty of nature) that derive from nature.
  • Ethical reasons - The moral responsibility of human beings to save and protect organisms not just for their utilitarian significance but also of their intrinsic value.
The aesthetic pleasures that derive from being close to nature are priceless. The joy that comes from bird watching, seeing wild animals on a wildlife safari, soaking in the beauty of the mountains, etc., is something that can never be valued in terms of money.

Thus areas rich in biodiversity often become sites for ecotourism and not only provide means of livelihood for the members of the local communities but also give the tourists an experience to cherish for a lifetime. People cannot put a price tag on such benefits derived from nature.

Thus, both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation for the assertion.
