When hypophosphorous acid, H3PO2 reacts with iodine in acid, being a powerful reducing agent, it reduces I2 and produces phosphorous acid, H3PO3 and hydrogen iodide.

H3PO2+I2+H2OH3PO3+2HI

H3PO3 in alkaline solution again reduces another mole of I2.

H3PO3+OH+I2H3PO4+2HI
