Assertion :When beetroot placed in pure water no colouration of water occurs but when placed in water saturated with benzene, it becomes red. Reason: Beetroot contain red pigments but due to the impermeability of plasma membrane, they do not come outside but as an effect of benzene, membrane cells die and water surrounding the beetroot becomes coloured.

Anthocyanin is a red colour water-soluble pigment found in plant vacuoles. The membrane being lipid in nature does not allow free passage of hydrophilic or water-soluble compounds. Lipid nature of cell membrane can be destroyed with solvents like benzene. Benzene treated beetroots leak out anthocyanin pigment, while pigment is retained in untreated roots. Thus, the correct answer is option A.
