Question

Assertion :ZX4 undergoes 2αdecays,2βdecays (negative β), and 2γdecays. As a result, the daughter product is z2YAB Reason: In αdecay, the mass number decreases by 4 unit and atomic number decreases by 2 unit. In βdecay (negative β), the mass number remains unchanged and atomic number increases by 1 unit. In γdecay, mass number and atomic number remain unchanged.

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
We know that for a α decay: AZXAZY
For 2 α decay: AZXAZ1Y
For a λ decay: AZXAZY
Thus, after decaying 2 α,2β and 2 λ decay , mass number becomes A=A2(4)=A8 and atomic number Z=Z2(2)+2(1)=Z4+2=Z2
The daughter nucleus is A8Z2Y.
