Question

Assume that the chances of a patient having a heart attack is 40%. Assuming that a mediation and yoga course reduces the risk of heart attack by 30% and prescription of certain drug reduces its chance by 25%. At a time a patient can choose any one of the two options with equal possibilities. It is given that after going through one of the two options, the patient selected at random suffers a heart attack. Find the probability that the patient followed a course of mediation and yoga. Interpret the result and state which of the above stated methods is more beneficial for the patient.

Solution

Let E be the event that a patient had a heart attack.
Let E1 be the event that a patient used Drug A, therefore, P(E1)=12

Let E2 be the event that a patient used Drug B, therefore, P(E2)=12

Required probability: P(E1E)
P(EE1)=40100(130100)=28100

P(EE2)=40100(125100)=30100

Also P(E1)=P(E2)=12
P(Probability that the person who had heart attach followed meditation and yoga)= P(E1E)

P(E2E)=P(EE2).P(E2)4i=1(P(EEi)).P(Ei)

=28100×1228100×12+30100×12

=2820028200+30200=2828+30=1429
