Question

Assuming covalent radii to be additive property; The benzene ring is regular hexagon and each CI bond lies on a line passing through the centre of hexagon. The CC bond length in C6H6 is 1.40˚A and covalent radius of iodine and carbon atom are 1.33˚A and 0.77˚A. Also neglect different overlapping effect.
The sum of iodine-iodine distances in o,m,p di-iodobenzene is X ˚A. Value of 100X is:

Solution

sin30=yCIbondlength
0.5=y0.77+1.33
y=1.05A0.
X=CC bond length + 2y=1.40+2(1.05)=3.50.
100X=3.50×100=350.
