Question

At 10oC, the osmotic pressure of urea solution is 500 mm. The solution is diluted and the temperature is raised to 25oC, when the osmotic pressure is found to be 105.3 mm. Determine extent of dilution.

Solution

We have the equation π=iCRT
As urea is non-electrolyte, i=1

πsolution=iCsolutionRT1 >1
πsolution=iCsolutionRT2 >2

Dividing Equation 1 and 2,

πureaπsolution=CureaT1CsolutionT2

500×298105×283=CureaCsolution

We get,
5Csolution=Curea

This means the solution was dilluted 5 times with respect to the urea concentration.
