Question

At 25oC, what changes in pH occur (to the nearest integer) when 0.1 millimole of a strong acid is added to 25mL of H2O?

Open in App
Solution

The pH of pure water is 7. When 0.1 millimole of strong acid is added, the hydrogen ion concentration will be 0.1×103 mol25 mL×1 L1000 mL=0.004M.
The pH of the solution is pH=log[H+]=log0.004=2.398
Thus, the change in the pH of the solution is 72.398=4.6025
