Question

At 817oC, Kp for the reaction between CO2(g) and excess hot graphite (s) is 10 atm.
(a) What are the equilibrium concentrations of gases at 817oC and a total pressure of 5 atm?
(b) At what total pressure the gas contains 5% CO2 by volume?

Solution

(a) CO2(g)+C(s)2CO(g)
At equi, (5x) atm x atm
Kp=[CO]2[CO2]
10=x25x
x=10±100+2002=3.66
i.e., pCO=3.66atm;pCO2=1.34atm
Concentration of CO=pRT=3.660.0821×1090=0.041mollitre1
Concentration of CO2=pRT=1.340.0821×1090=0.015mollitre1
(b) CO2(g)+C(s)2CO(g)
t=0 1 0 0
teq. 1α 2α
pi (1α1+α)p (2α(1+α))p
Kp=[(2α(1+α))p]2(1α1+α)p=4α2p1α2...(i)
5100=1α1+α
α=0.95
From eq. (i), 10=4×0.95210.952×p
p=0.27atm
