Question

At a particular temperature, a certain quantity of a gas occupies a volume of 74cm3 at a pressure of760mm. If the pressure is decreased to740mm, what will be the volume of the gas at the same temperature?

Solution

The initial volume of gas(V1)=74cm3; initial pressure of gas (P1)=760mm at a constant temperature.

The final volume of gas(V2)=?; final pressure of gas (P2)=740mm at a constant temperature.

Since the temperature is constant, According to Boyle's law,

P1V1=P2V2

Putting the values of pressure and volume

760mm×74cm3=740mm×V2

760mm×74cm3740mm=V2

Hence, V2=76cm3
