Question

At room temperature (27.0oC) the resistance of a heating element is 100Ω . What is the temperature of the element if the resistance is found to be 117Ω, given that the temperature coefficient of the material of the resistor is 1.70×104C1.

Solution

Step 1: Relation between value of resistance and temperature

R=R0[1+α(TT0)]

Step 1: Temperature calculation
Let T is the increased temperature of the element, putting all the values in the formula to find T
T0=27oC, R0=100Ω, R=117Ω, α=1.70×104 oC1

117=100[1+1.7×104(T27)]

T=1027oC
