Question

at room temperature n 2 is much less reactive

Open in App
Solution

Hello,

The reason why nitrogen gas is inert at room temperature is because the triple bond between the two nitrogen atoms in each nitrogen molecule (N2) is very strong. Therefore, it takes a lot of energy to break that bond, i.e. the bond dissociation energy of nitrogen molecule is very high. That is why nitrogen can not react with any other molecule until its triple bond is broken.
