At the top of a mountain, the thermometer reads 0∘C and the barometer reads 700mmHg. At the bottom of the mountain, the thermometer reads 30∘C and, the pressure 760mmHg. Compare the density of the air at the top of that at the bottom.

Solution
The correct option is A1.021
Solution:- (A) 1.021
From ideal gas equation,
PV=nRT
n= No. of moles =wt. (w)Mol. wt. (M)
∴PV=(wM)RT
⇒PM=(wV)RT
As we know that,
Density(d)=wt.(w)volume(V)
∴PM=dRT
For the same gas,
d∝PT
∴d1d2=P1P2×T2T1
Given:-
P1=700 mm Hg
P2=760 mm Hg
T1=0℃=273K
T2=30℃=(30+273)=303K
∴d1d2=700760×303273
⇒d1d2=1.021
Hence the rtio of density of the air at the top to that at the bottom is 1.021.
