Atomic number = number of protons and number of protons = number of electrons. So can we say that atomic number = number of electrons

Open in App
Solution

In the case of a neutral (no charge) atom the number of electron is equal to number of proton

In a atom loss of electron leads to positive charged ion and gain of electron leads to negatively charged ion

In the case of a charged atom(ions) the number of electron is not same as proton.

example
In a (cl- )ion
electrons = 18
proton=17
at number =17
