Atoms of most elements are not able to exist independently. Why?
Most of the atoms are reactive and can form more stable substances by combining.
Atoms of most elements are not able to exist independently because they are reactive. They react to form more stable substances. The atoms having Octet configuration (8 electrons in outermost orbit) are more stable and inert. The atoms try to attain this configuration by sharing, losing and gaining electrons. This will be further discussed in next chapter.
