Question

ATP synthase enzyme consists of two parts. What are those parts? How are they arranged in the thylakoid membrane? Conformational changes occur in which part of the enzyme?

Solution

Arrangement of ATP synthase enzyme

ATP synthase enzymes have two units, F0 and F1.
F0 subunit is present within the thylakoid membrane and F1 subunit is present facing the stroma of the chloroplast.

Conformational change

When protons pass through the F0 subunit of the ATP synthase, it causes conformational change in the F1 subunit which rotates and releases ATP molecules in the stroma of the chloroplast.
