Solution

Dear Gracy,

Average atomic mass can be calculated in the following manner:Average atomic mass of Mg =(m1x1 +m2x2 +m3x3)x1+x2+x3Where m1, m2 and m3 are the atomic mass of different isotops& x1, x2 and x3 are the mole percent.GivenAverage atomic mass of magnesium is 24.31 a.m.u. This magnesium is composed of 79 mole % of 24Mg and remaining 21 mole % of 25Mg & 26Mg. Calculate mole % of Mg 26.Letmole percent of 25Mg is 'a' & mole percent of 26Mg is '21-a'Put the values in above equation24.31=[24×79 +25a +26(21-a)]100a = 11 so the mole percent of 25Mg is 11 and 26Mg is 21-11=10. Mole percent of 26Mg is 10
