Solution

Elements X is a metal with valency 2 and elements Y is a non-metal with a valency 3.

  1. Y is a non-metal that gain three electrons and forms Y3- anion.

The chemical equation is:

Y+3e-Y3-(ion)

ii If Y is a diatomic gas then it will react with X to form a compound X3Y2.

The chemical equation is:

3X+Y2X3Y2
