Question

(b) If the pipe is filled with air at pressure 1.00×105 Pa and density 1.20kg/m3, what will be the amplitude A and wavelength λ of a longitudinal wave with intensity 3.00×106W/m2 and frequency 3400 Hz?

Solution

Given- P=1.00×105Pa,I=3.00×106W/m2,f=3400Hz,ρ=1.20kg/m3, ,
speed of sound in a medium is given by ,
v=(γP/ρ) , (γ=1.4 , as in air most of the gases are diatomic )
v=(1.4×1.00×105/1.20)=340.5m/s ,
we have , v=fλ ,
or λ=v/f=340.5/3400=0.1m ,
now intensity of longitudinal wave is given by ,
I=2π2f2A2vρ ,
or A2=I/(2π2f2vρ)=3.00×1062×3.142×34002×340.5×1.20=3.22×1017m ,
or A=5.67×109m
