Question

(b) Methane molecule is non-polar molecule. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

In each of the four C-H bonds in methane molecule has the electrons are unequally shared. Carbon having a high electronegativity than hydrogen, attracts the electron pair towards itself slightly.

As a result, the C-H bond in methane is slightly polar but the molecule it is nonpolar because of symmetry. The polarity in symmetric molecules is cancelled out as it acts in opposite directions for all four bonds.
