Try to construct triangles using matchsticks. Some are shown here. Can you make a triangle with:

4 matchsticks?

(Remember you have to use all the available matchsticks)
Name the type of triangle. If you cannot make a triangle, think of reasons for it.

Answer 1

To make a triangle, the sum of any two sides must be greater than the third side.
Using 4 matchsticks, the length of any one side will be too long to make a triangle as it will violate the property stated above.
Hence we cannot make a triangle using 4 matchsticks.
