Solution

  1. The element X has atomic number 12 and element Y has atomic number 16. The electronic configuration of X will be 2, 8, 2 and that of Y will be 2, 8, 6.
  2. The number of shells is an element is equal to the period to which it belongs. X element has 3 shells so it will belong to 3rd period, Y will also belong to 3rd period as it has 3 shells.
  3. The elements X and Y will form ionic bond as X has 2 valence electrons and it will give those electrons to element Y as it requires 2 more electrons.
