Question

Balance the chemical equation CaC2(s)+H2O(l)Ca(OH)2(aq)+C2H2(g)

Open in App
Solution

The skeletal chemical equation is: CaC2(s)+H2O(l)Ca(OH)2(aq)+C2H2(g)

Step 1: For balancing a equation the number of elements on both the side should have to be equal. So basically, the number of elements on (LHS) should be equal to (RHS)

Element

Reactant side

Product side

Calcium11
Oxygen12
Carbon22
Hydrogen24

As the number of atoms of Oxygen and Hydrogen are not equal on both the sides.

Step 2: For balancing the chemical equation, just multiply H2O with 2, so that the number of all the elements on LHS be equal to that on the RHS.

Element

Reactant side

Product side

Calcium11
Oxygen22
Carbon22
Hydrogen44

Therefore, the reaction is: CaC2(s)+2H2O(l)Ca(OH)2(aq)+C2H2(g)
