Question

Balance the following equation:

N2+H2NH3

Open in App
Solution

  • Balanced equation: The chemical equation in which the number of atoms of each element on the reactant side as well as the product side is equal is known as a balanced equation.

Balancing the following chemical equation:

N2+H2NH3

Steps to Balance the chemical equation:

  • Count the number of atoms of each element on either side. Now first balance the compound with the maximum number of atoms

A number of atoms of each element on the reactant side:

N=2 H=2

A number of atoms of each element on the product side:

N=1 H=3

  • As the number of nitrogen and hydrogen is not equal on both the reactant and product sides so we will first balance nitrogen thus multiplying ammonia (NH3) by 2 on the right-hand side. The reaction becomes:

N2+H22NH3

  • Now we will balance hydrogen by multiplying left-hand side hydrogen by 3. The following equation is obtained:

N2(g)nitrogen+3H2(g)hydrogen2NH3(g)ammonia

thus in the above equation, the no. of nitrogen and hydrogen atoms are equal on both sides. Hence it is a balanced equation.
