Question

Balance the following unbalanced equations:

Na2CO3+HClNaCl+H2O+CO2

Open in App
Solution

Steps involved in balancing a chemical reaction:

Step 1: Write the unbalanced equation.

Na2CO3+HClNaCl+H2O+CO2

Step 2: Write down the number of atoms of each elements present on both reactant as well as product side.

Element Reactant side Product side

Na 2 1

C 1 1

O 3 3

H 1 2

Cl 1 1

Step 3: Add coefficients to balance the number of atoms on both the sides

Firstly balance Na at product side by adding 2 before NaCl.

Na2CO3+HCl2NaCl+H2O+CO2

Secondly balance Cl at reactant side by adding 2 before HCl.

Na2CO3+2HCl2NaCl+H2O+CO2

Check whether remaining elements (C, H and O) in the reaction are also balanced.

The balanced equation is:

Na2CO3(aq)+2HCl(aq)2NaCl(aq)+H2O(l)+CO2(g)

Sodium bicarbonate Hydrochloric acid Sodium chloride Water Carbon dioxide
