Question

Balance the reactions:
CH4+O2CO2+H2O

Open in App
Solution

The given reaction is a combustion reaction of methane.
The given reaction is
CH4+O2CO2+H2O
First, we will balance carbon and hydrogen.
There are four hydrogens on the left side of the reaction and two hydrogens on the right-hand side.
Thus we will multiply right-hand side hydrogen molecule with 2.
CH4+O2CO2+2H2O
Now, we will balance oxygen.
There is four oxygen on the right-hand side and only two on the lefthand side. Thus we will multiply left-hand side oxygen by 2.
Thus, the balance chemical reaction will be:
CH4+2O2CO2+2H2O
