Question

Balloons of 4l capacity are to be filled with hydrogen at a pressure of 1 atm and 27oC from an 8 l cylinder containing hydrogen at 10 atm at the same temperature. Find the number of balloons that can be filled.

Solution

At same temperature,
P1V2=P2V2 (Boyle's law)
P1=10atm;P2=1atm
V1=4l=V2=8l
But while filling balloons from cylinder when pressure in cylinder becomes 1 atm then further filling is not possible (P1=9atm)
Let n be the number of balloons that can be filled.
P1V1=n(P1V1)
9×8=n(4×1)
n=9×84=18balloons
